I believe that we should nurture our volunteers who find the time to form community support groups.
There are support groups who are lucky enough to have a high profile and sponsorship. But I am well aware that there are many more who work just as hard for just as important causes but cant raise their profile or find sponsorship. You deserve recognition and those you support deserve to have access to you.
I intend to make a list of those groups here so you can find someone who cares when you need someone to talk to.
Some of the support groups I respect that have web addresses are listed below - Of course I want to add more - so let me know about the support groups you know of !!

Alzheimer's Australia - in particular the dementias ( Binswanger's disease - as per request of a listener looking for support group)
Anxiety Disorders Association - ADAVIC anxiety support group - Victorian based
Anxiety Panic Hub - a great resource for information on panic and anxiety disorders including phobias
ARAFEMI - Association of relatives and friends of the emotionally and mentally ill ( this is the Victorian branch there are other branches in Australia - some use the acronym ARAFMI)

Australian Multiple Birth Association Twins, triplets quads and beyond - a support group for parents .
Brain Foundation support and information about Brain Injury, Brain conditions e and headache
Breast Cancer Networks Australia organise the annual "Field of women" display and offer support to women with Breast Cancer
Canteen - organisation run by young people supporting young people with Cancer - famous for bandana day
Canya - a support group for young adults with cancer ( suggested by a listener - thank you)
Canadian Organisation for Rare Diseases a most impressive website cllecting people who have rare diseases so they can get together with other people with the same problems

Heart Kids non medical support for families of children with heart problems - there is national contacts list on this site
Heart Beat Victoria - this organisation is a group of people with cardiac conditions who have formed a support group for information and social activities. They have limited accommodation for people needing to travel to Melbourne for treatment. Their links page is a very comprehensive resource for heart health and support info in Australia and overseas
Hearts of Hope - the fabulous site for families of children with congenital heart disease. An inspiring read. Some stories do not have happy endings but the strength of the families is amazing - congratulations Deb!
