** UPDATE ON STEM CELLS December 2006 - Senator Patterson's Bill passed through both houses of the Federal Parliament of Australia . This historic Bill allows scientists to now do research using Somatic Cell nuclear transfer techniques to try to understand how single cell develops into a whole person and also to understand disease processes. Hopefully this may lead to therapies.
During the course of the passage of this Bill there was, in my mind a most disturbing issue that arose in relation to Catholic Health Australia's attitude to any therapies that may be derived from embryonic stem cells. Bishop Anthony Fisher stated categorically to the senate inquiry that if any such therapies became available in Australia they would not be allowed to be provided to patients in their hospitals . I spoke publicly on the issue and I stand firm that I believe that while they may do as they wish, within the law, in their private hospitals. However , at least in Victoria, I am aware that some of their hospitals are funded by the state government and in particular St Vincent's hospital Melbourne is advertised as a public hospital. In my opinion Catholic Health Australia must make any patient in their care aware of any restrictions of practice they may mandate their hospitals to follow and provide the patients with alternative avenues to find care should the patient wish to pursue it.
