EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES and CRITICAL CARE COORDINATION
It is right to think these days in Australia that if you have a medical emergency you dial 000 and things just all happen from there. But have you ever thought about the coordination and protocols and man power that goes into the well oiled machine that is our emergency services here in Australia.
Assoc
Prof Joe Epstein is one of the founders of the College of Emergency Medicine and
has been a pioneer
in Australian Emergency Medicine for several decades. Joe is the director or Critical
Care services for Victoria and his expertise in medical
disaster coordination has
seen him advise and lecture all over the world. Today Joe joins us to give us
some insight into the incredible set up that we have here in our country to see
time critical medical emergencies
managed with the minimum of fuss .
He’ll
explain about the Medical Emergency Adult retrieval Service, which provides snap
to action mercy flights for critically ill patients in need of transfer to other
hospitals with appropriate facilities
Dr
Johannes Wenzel also joins us to explain the workings of
and Emergency Unit in a busy Suburban Hospital he is
Director of Emergency at Dandenong Hospital

SAILING SOUTH REGATTA
The
Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania was founded in 1880. According to their website you
can find them at Latitude 42º 54'
South, Longitude 147º 19.9' East – but for land lubbers you’d probably find
it easier if I told you it is
situated in Hobart’s beautiful Sandy Bay, just a olive or cocktail umbrella
throw from Wrest Point Casino.
Today,
in its 123rd year, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania continues to host
some of the most important yachting events in Australia’s sailing calendar.
Last week our South Island Capital opened its arms to international visitors
with the culmination of the Blue Water Classic - Rolex
Sydney to Hobart.
But
that’s not all – they also it welcomed the old salts who braved some of the
world’s most unpredictable waters in the gruelling Melbourne to Hobart yacht
race which each year sees lambs got to the proverbial slaughter through the treacherous “rip”
at the mouth of port Phillip Bay, traverse Bass Strait and hug the formidable
stark west coast of Tasmania before arriving in welcoming Hobart town – The
latter race doesn’t seem to attract the same publicity as the Rolex Sydney to
Hobart but talk to yachties about this one and they’ll tell you about the
adrenalin pumping action or just shake their head in a mix of admiration and
fear for those who enter.
Every
year Hobart turns it on for their interstate and international salty visitors.
Jazz bands on motor launches escort the sailing heroes. And do they party?
Yachties know how to do THAT !
The
TV cameras for the Sydney to Hobart may have packed up but the party didn’t
end last week. Hobart is STILL partying NOW!
The
Sydney and Melbourne to Hobart races mark the beginning of The Royal Yacht Club
of Tasmania’s SAILING SOUTH REGATTA. Now in its second year visiting sailors
are invited to stick around, party and sail some more. An invitation
irresistible to die hard yachties !
A
couple of beers, a bbq and they get their second wind to
take part in 5 days of races in more predictable conditions on the
gorgeous Derwent River. This regatta is not only about the big boats because
RYCT also hosts the world championship races for the Mirror Class .Although they
look like sparrows next to the Maxis the enthusiasm of their skippers for the
sport is just as big !
Robert
"biddy" Badenach is the Commodore of Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania
he’s taking time out from events to talk to us about the celebrations and
sport that’s made Hobart the centre of the yachting universe in the last few
weeks

CELEBRITY CHECK UP
TED
HAMILTON
You may know him as a copper or
a pirate, a romantic cruise ships captain or
more
recently a medieval magician but Ted Hamilton has another side to him that is a
show stopper and he’s back in Australia after spending the last couple of
decades doing just that in America.
In July last year I sat
in an intimate theatre in with about 300 people. It was set up like a cabaret .
As I looked around the room I realised that there were just about all the faces
that I grew up watching on my TV. I was an avid Division 4 fan and Constable
Kevin Dwyer was definitely easy to watch – as a 14 year old you can dream. I
was invited to the concert by a friend who told me that Kevin Dwyer was more
like Frank Sinatra these days – I had to see this.
When I Ted Hamilton heard
sing everything from Danny Boy to Mack
the Knife I lamented yet again as to why we don’t nurture
our home grown talent and keep them here
Of course after Division
4 Ted had his own music show on the ABC here but in the 70’s music in
Australia was moving away from crooning and jazz. In the United States Ted did
become a successful singing artist but again you’ll know him better for his TV
and film roles –
As
Captain Thomas Ford in the 1976 series of the Love Boat and the Pirate King in
the Pirate movie loosely related Gilbert and Sullivan Pirates of Penzance. You
will have seen him also pop up in Mission Impossible
and the Six Million Dollar Man. Last year he played Merlin in the TV
series Guinevere Jones .
If you are a MASH devotee
then you will recall his role as the doctor (British Lieutenant Chivers)
with an ingrown toenail who bribed Hawk Eye and BJ to operate on his foot
with 2 bottles of scotch.
But what you probably
don’t know about Ted is his other talent. In the 60’s he was one of
Australia’s brightest Squash players!
These days Ted hopes to bring
back the magical musical days of last century in a TV series. I
for one would be watching !
