 THE SCIENCE OF SPORTS SHOES

A  SHOE BY ANY OTHER NAME ?

JUST BUY IT ? NO WAY

Rock Osler , together with two colleagues has recently  opened a  sports shoe store - but this is no ordinary shoe store -  and these are no ordinary shoe salesmen - The three are all sports podiatrists who  will analyse your running style and prescribe shoes that best fit your need - Their store is called ACTIVE FEET and its just opened in Melbourne's High  St Prahran

A session with the boys involves a  complete a treadmill-video analysis of your run gait. current foot pattern whilst running, and the performance of your current running shoe.  Through video feedback they  can show you how the right shoe can assist in a better foot position and ensuring optimal performance and reduced risk of injury.

These days it seems you need a university degree to work your way through not only the many brands but all the different styles of  specialist sports show - gee I remember when the dunlop volley was high tech !

We all want things to be more efficient , and multipurpose items certainly fit the bill in our ergonomic world. But  Kerry  and James West  have put a new twist  on the concept . They can create fruit trees to order. Fancy  peaches  plums  and nectarines growing in your back yard - but you've only got a postage stamp ? No worries - Kerry can create a tree that bears all three fruits !!!

The Fruit Salad Tress are not sold in nurseries and can be "grown" to order ! We'll be talking to Kerry to find out how they do this

CELEBRITY CHECK UP

GLENN SHORROCK

Born in England emigrated to Australia with his family as a young adolescent. Grew up in Elizabeth in Adelaide –  He was already obsessed with rock n roll before leaving England and soon teamed up with other young men interested in music. He formed a band called the Checkmates – but after one member left it was renamed the Twighlights. They had no backing band and so they couldn’t do rock n roll – instead they  started out performing á capalla . The line up changed, instruments were added but the name remained the same . The Twighlights became huge in Australia with hits like Needle in a Hay Stack . Indeed the group had 8 hits in a row . They left Australia for England but like many other fabulous Australian talent of the day success over there was not to be their’s . In 1968 the Twighlights broke up  - but not long after Glenn and Brian Cadd formed AXIOM  - This band enjoyed huge success with such hits as Brian Cadd's timeless -  Little Ray of Sunshine . Axiom also went to England but  they too were not to be successful . The band broke up

It was at this time that Glenn turned to song writing seriously. In 1973 he became part of a 12 piece European music experiment called Esperanto Rock Orchestra which  promoted itself as a truly International  Rock Orchestra – with its members from far flung parts of the globe. Glenn was writing lyrics and providing backing vocals but it wasn’t working for him.

In 1974 Glenn Shorrock  found himself back  in London . Beeb Birtles and Graeham Gobles were  there too with their  band Mississippi. One night  they  met up with  Masters Apprentice's , Glenn Wheatley . Legend has it that they had a jam. They all agreed that  Beeb and Graeham's harmonies blended with Glenn  Shorrock's' voice in a way that could work well . So they pledged to meet up again once back in Australia.

That decision would eventually  put a small town just outside Geelong in Victoria on the World Map.  Not because they came from there but because on the way to their first concert in Geelong as Mississippi they noticed a road sign to  Little River - That was the last time they performed as Mississippi ( just as well coos its to hard to spell ).

The rest is history - LRB became a huge success and as time passed each of the three eventually left the band achieving successful individual  music careers .

Beeb Birtles Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Gobles - Back together again However Glenn, Beeb and Graeham are back together  and touring Australia under their own name " Birtles, Shorrock and Goble".

  BUSH FIRE PREPARATION

There maybe  the global uncertainty about war but we are reminded this week that every year at this time we  face a different type of war and  terror right here at home - and man is not  necessarily the enemy . Its BUSH FIRES .

Its easy to become complacent but the combination of drought and heat is a killer.

Today Fires still rage around Sydney and people are struggling against natures force.  Other States have sent fire fighters to assist the NSW workers  but we all need to take note and check out our own houses and yards to reduce fire risk.

Depending on the state of the fires we will either be talking with a representative of the NSW Fire Service or if they are too bust we'll take advice from another state's service about tips for making your house safer during the bush fire season

 ARSONISTS

Its seems incomprehensible that such destruction may have been started by someone looking for thrills, but too often fires are deliberately lit.

According to articles in the Newspapers today and yesterday a young man has  been charged in relation to a scrub fire in Sydney.

We'll be talking to our expert on matters of law enforcement - former Chief of Police Western Australia - Bob Falconer  about why  people who start fires.
