CELEBRITY CHECK UP
GLENN SHORROCK
Born
in England emigrated to Australia with his family as a young adolescent. Grew up
in Elizabeth in Adelaide – He
was already obsessed with rock n roll before leaving England and soon teamed up
with other young men interested in music. He formed a band called the Checkmates
– but after one member left it was renamed the Twighlights. They had no
backing band and so they couldn’t do rock n roll – instead they started
out performing á capalla . The line up changed, instruments were added but the
name remained the same . The Twighlights became huge in Australia with hits like
Needle in a Hay Stack . Indeed the group had 8 hits in a row . They left
Australia for England but like many other fabulous Australian talent of the day
success over there was not to be their’s . In 1968 the Twighlights broke up -
but not long after Glenn and Brian Cadd formed AXIOM -
This band enjoyed huge success with such hits as Brian Cadd's timeless - Little
Ray of Sunshine . Axiom also went to England but
they too were not to be successful . The band broke up
In 1974 Glenn Shorrock found himself back in London . Beeb Birtles and Graeham Gobles were there too with their band Mississippi. One night they met up with Masters Apprentice's , Glenn Wheatley . Legend has it that they had a jam. They all agreed that Beeb and Graeham's harmonies blended with Glenn Shorrock's' voice in a way that could work well . So they pledged to meet up again once back in Australia.
That decision would eventually put a small town just outside Geelong in Victoria on the World Map. Not because they came from there but because on the way to their first concert in Geelong as Mississippi they noticed a road sign to Little River - That was the last time they performed as Mississippi ( just as well coos its to hard to spell ).
The rest is history - LRB became a huge success and as time passed each of the three eventually left the band achieving successful individual music careers .
However
Glenn, Beeb and Graeham are back together and touring Australia
under their own name " Birtles, Shorrock and Goble".
We'll be catching up with Glenn as he rehearses for a very special event tonight - a fundraiser in honour of the 5 young men from Coogee Dolphins Footy Club who were killed in the Bali Bombing in October

There maybe the global uncertainty about war but we are reminded this week that every year at this time we face a different type of war and terror right here at home - and man is not necessarily the enemy . Its BUSH FIRES .
Its easy to become complacent but the combination of drought and heat is a killer.
Today Fires still rage around Sydney and people are struggling against natures force. Other States have sent fire fighters to assist the NSW workers but we all need to take note and check out our own houses and yards to reduce fire risk.
Depending on the state of the fires we will either be talking with a representative of the NSW Fire Service or if they are too bust we'll take advice from another state's service about tips for making your house safer during the bush fire season

We'll be talking to our expert on matters of law enforcement - former Chief of Police Western Australia - Bob Falconer about why people who start fires.
