SATURDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2002
SCHOOLIES ON THE GOLD COAST
In
the words of the famous Alice Cooper -"school's out for summer
.....school's out for ever" ...... and with the end of their year 12
exams, young people flock to the sunny days and hazy nights at the
traditional annual celebration on the Gold Coast in Queensland which is now
known ( indeed trademarked ) as "schoolies". ( the
trademark is owned by Breakaway Travel.)
Schoolies has become so famous that someone even made a movie about it ! Possibly describing schoolies in a single word, the movie is called "Blurred" . Blurred stars Matthew Newton as the limo driver who chauffeurs two young women to the event. We'll 'speak to producer Chris Brown about the movie.
Jan Grew, Gold Coast Councillor, is Schoolies Week spokesperson. She will be telling us what kids can expect and what local authorities are doing to make the stay fun and safer. The catch phrase is "The Natural High - Alternative" .

PROCEDURE OF THE WEEK
- ENDOMETRIAL ABLATION -
In days past women who suffered torrential periods were offered little other than hysterectomy once medication and curettes had failed. These days there are other options. One such option is Endometrial Ablation.
Dr
Jim Tsaltas is a
Gynaecologist who's interest is key hole ( endoscopic)
surgery. He will be explaining this procedure which in effect permanently
removes the lining of the uterus - the endometrium - which is usually shed
each month as a period . It is done via a pencil like instrument inserted into
the uterus via the cervix. It has a camera to see with and a heat
generating tip which burns the lining away. It is not always possible to
completely eradicate periods but usually they are markedly reduced in
heaviness.
Although the rest of the uterus remains in tact, you would not have this procedure if you were still wanting to get pregnant in the furture.
I suppose you could call it the hysterectomy you have when you are not having a hysterectomy !
for more info on this procedure check out -
http://www.endometrialablation.com/ - this American site is extremely comprehensive - it even has a movie showing the procedure ! You dont need to go to Texas to have the procedure - your GP can refer you locally if it is indicated
Shoplifting
- SHOPSTEALING -
10/11/02 by order of Bob Falconer we shall not call it shoplifting anymore :)
The
news has been full of stories about American Actor Winona Ryder and
charges of Shoplifting . This week she was found guilty. So why would
someone seemingly with everything risk blowing it with something like
$5000 worth of shoplifting ?
Are shoplifters criminals or do they have a mental illness. Some people say Kleptomania a diagnosis of convenience. Experts call it an "impulse control disorder" .
Bob
Falconer - former Chief Commissioner of Western Australia and Deputy
Commissioner Victoria Police will join us to discuss the security issues.
THE BEST STEAK !
Red meat took a beating sometime ago from health experts but now the tide is turning to show meat is still probably the best source of iron we have in our diet.
What is the best cut of beef to make the juiciest steak? How come I cant get that "cooked to perfection" on the outside and juicy on the inside from my griller ? Should it have marbling ? Is rump superior to porterhouse ? Confused ? Lets ask the experts !
Valdo's
is rated as one of the coveted Mietta's Best Australian Restaurants
for 2002 . Vlado Gregurik describes himself not as a chef but as a "red
meat specialist", and that he certainly is ! Vlado has been preparing
the best steaks for 33 years. His restaurant is famous - a carnivore's delight .
No menu - you just sit down and it all just happens. When you first eat Vlado's
steak you realise that you've never really had steak before. It's
fabulous.
Meat
and Livestock Australia is an industry association for Australia's livestock
producers . They are involved in research and development for our country's meat
industry which is one of the finest in the world. They even have a page on their
website on how to prepare the perfect steak. We'll be talking to an expert on
meat from MLA.

ORGAN DONATION -
It is said that Australia has one of the lowest rates of organ donation in the Western World. Each day people, many children die, waiting for a transplant. Surgical techniques and medical advances have resulted in enormous successes in transplant survival rates. For years dedicated groups around teh country have been trying to find solutions to the question of what it is that stops people registering for organ donation after death.
A questionnaire was commissioned in 1999 looking at barriers to donation. Information and Education seems to be the key. We'll discuss the issues today with the people who know.
About
a month ago a beaming Margaret Pratt bounded up to me at an airport. I know
Margaret through the foundation she has set up to increase awareness of a rare
,often fatal condition that affects primarily young women - Primary Pulmonary
Hypertension. Margaret's lungs failed in 1994 and close to death, she was lucky
enough to receive a lung transplant. Unfortunately after a time and
despite medication her body began to reject the gift.
At the airport Margaret told me that she had only recently been discharged from hospital after receiving her second double lung transplant. She had been days away from death. Margaret will be joining us in the studio this afternoon
here are some links for further info on organ donation : -

A West Australian medical team have had a break through that can help those people with serious vision impairment due to cornea problems .
Previously people would need to wait for a donor cornea. Now it seems that successful development of an artificial cornea means sight for many of these people .
we'll speak to Dr Geoffrey Crawford an ophthalmologist from the University of Western Australia about the
- THE FEMALE FACTORY -
Some
years ago I was holidaying in Tasmania with my young daughter. I wa
s
interested in historical sites. She wanted to visit confectionary sites. The
compromise was a fudge factory built on the site of an early convict prison for
women. What we learned was fascinating. Today we will be talking to Shirley
McCarron, project manager about the story of the Female Factory in
Hobart, which was purchased by the Centenary
of federation funding purchased in 1999.

MANAGING
CAREER CRISES
–
Once
it was a given that you chose a career and stuck to it. These days that's not
always the case and specially not always a choice ! With redundancies and our
disposable work ethic people are often finding themselves faced with the
prospect of starting all over again .
Dr
Susie Linder-Pelz
is an expert in work, career and lifestyle planning. She has just published
her must read survival manual "From
Fear to Courage - Coping with Career Crisis". She runs her own business
which advises people on how to cope with career and life changes called Good
Decisions.
- MUSIC THERAPY-
Someone once said that music calms the savage beast and we all remember how Richard Dreyfuss discovered that music was the universal language of peace in Spielberg's classic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" .
Music Therapy is a recognised speciality where medicine meets the Arts. Using music as part of rehabilitation and development for people with special needs has become an integral part of treatment.

Associate Professor Denise Grocke is the Director of National Music Therapy
Research Unit and past president of the World federation of Music Therapy
. She founded the Music Therapy Course in the Faculty of Music at
the University of Melbourne in 1978, the first to be offered in Australia. She
will be joining us to talk about this fascinating form of therapy .
