* THE BALI TRAGEDY - WHERE TO FROM HERE ?
We'll be taking a look at the medical issues spilling out of last week's horrific explosions in Bali. We will have doctors on the studio and on the phone who were there. These doctors like so many nurses and volunteers they remain reluctant to speak. They are not seeking recognition. They are humble in the face of the terror faced by victims and families. They have agreed to speak so we might gain some understanding of what went on.
There are lots of people thinking about rasing money to help victims both here and in Bali. We need to be sure we do this responsibly and appropriately. We'll examine how we can help in tangible ways that will make a difference .There is no question that this tragedy is upper most in our thoughts but we must not forget other disasters that loom here at home - like our widespread drought with appeals like Farm Hand . I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the issue of how best to help.
There
have been sporadic reports in the Australian media questioning whether the
Bali tragedy has been reported adequately in the USA and whether the full extent
is understood. We'll be talking to New York radio broadcasting icon Bruce
Morrow about how much Americans have heard about last week's
events. Bruce is also the Chairman of the Variety
Club of New York , the Children's Charity. Just over a year ago,
Australians were quick to respond following 9/11. Within days, a
Variety Club here had gathered $A50,000 to send to a children's relief fund
coordinated by Bruce's branch of the Variety Club. We are not after money just
reassurance that Americans are aware of what has happened to our people, the
people of Bali and other nations.

Caring for our Elderly
Life seems to come full circle when we find that our parents need us to care for them. These days there is much debate about aged care in terms of facilities, support and especially support for those who choose to care for their elderly at home.
The
doyenne of Australian magazine publishing, Nene King built her reputation
in the roles of editor, editor in chief or editorial director of the Women's
Weekly and Woman's Day. She built them into the strongest monthly and weekly
women's magazines in Australia. The first woman to sit on Kerry Packer's
Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd board, Nene has been named as one of Australia's
10 most powerful women and in December 1999, was listed by MediaWeek as one of
the 10 leading media people of the decade. Now she has another challenge in her
life - looking after her aging mother.
Roland Rocchiccioli has just finished a successful season performing of his one man play "Now You Can Eat Father Christmas" about his mother's amazing life in out back Western Australia where she lived as a young woman. These days she lives with Roland and he is her sole carer. Roland is outspoken many things - but particularly aged care and carer issues.
I
wonder if Alan Hopgood is the one that made me choose
medicine!! After all I grew up in the 60's watching him as Dr Read on the ABC's
soap Bellbird. He will be well known to everyone as " Wally" from
Prisoner and "Jack Lassiter" in Ten's Neighbours. He also has a long
history of live theatre performances as well as numerous film
credits. But in recent times it is his poignant stories about human
struggles with every day issues that has brought him to prominence. His
frank book about his own personal journey through prostate cancer
and beyond has helped so many men deal with the issue especially when he
turned it in to the hilariously funny play - "For Better, For
Worse". Today we will be looking at his reasons for writing his
latest play "the Carer" about a man who's wife has recently died
following years of slow deterioration with Alzheimer's disease
CELEBRITY CHECK UP
Australian
Entertainment industry icon, BUD TINGWELL will be put through his paces
in this week's Celebrity Check up
On a serious note - Bud is currently starring in Alan Hopgood's - "The Carer"- A Play about a man who's recently lost his wife after years of caring for her as she deteriorated with Alzheimer's disease.
