DADS WEEKEND ON

* Family matters -  Its not what anyone would plan  but  separated families are a common fact of the 21st Century. Responsible people try hard to achieve an amicable  balance that will allow their kids to grow up with  the minimum of disruption. But emotions can get in the way and sometimes the adults behave more like children!

In the studio we will have  Pete French from The Family Mediation Centres. He counsels families and especially Dads on issues relating to  their children after a separation. There are groups who feel the family Law process is biased towards mothers and that Dads get a raw deal - we'll be taking you calls on this one.

We'll also be discussing coping with part time parenting whether you are a mum dad or child - and making the most of your time with your family as well as tips on how to minimise trauma to all concerned.

Rule number 1 - DON'T make your kids your spy ........

PROFILE OF A MURDERER

Curling up with a good crime thriller novel is always a good escape. But the recently the crimes being reported in the news  make me wonder if truth is stranger than fiction.

We'll be talking with two men whose jobs are all about crime and very often the crime of  murder. We'll be looking at the processes involved in tracking down a killer and what it is that drives people to commit such crimes.

Dr John Birrell is  a retired police surgeon and patron  of Australians Against Child Abuse. He  has spent his working life talking to and  treating  people who commit  crimes. He  took a particular interest in the patterns of behaviour surrounding murderers/

Claude Minisini  is a former policeman who trained with the FBI as a Murder Profiler. He is now the head of a large investigation firm and his opinion has been sought in some of the worlds most baffling cases. His job is to sift through the known  facts and build up a picture of perpetrator .

CHILDHOOD OBESITY SUMMIT UPDATE

Last week we spoke with Rosemary Stanton about the epidemic of childhood obesity sweeping the world. Complications like  diabetes usually reserved for older persons  are being seen in people younger  than ever before. Kids are eating more and exercising less. Consultative processes are happening round the country seeking public opinion on solutions. In September the NSW summit on childhood obesity concluded with recommendations being made to the State Government.

On Thursday  the Victorian Summit concluded. The community based panel  spent 2 days listening to submissions from various experts and interested groups. While their recommendation  paper covered many things - their  message to the advertising and fast food industry was strong. They advise state and federal governments to  ban advertising of fast food, confectionary and soft drinks before 8:30 PM . The advice will be considered by the Victorian State Minister for Health.

We'll be talking to  representatives of the advertising and food industry with their reaction as well as Prof Michael Carr Gregg , adolescent psychologist with his thoughts on  effectiveness of the potential bans.
