During the time this program goes to air 12 Australians will die from cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability around the world, and is responsible for more than 16 million deaths every year – That’s more than cancer, and more than all respiratory, digestive and non-communicable diseases combined.

67 per cent of all families and more than 3.2 million people in Australia are affected by cardiovascular disease

At a cost of $7 billion a year, Cardiovascular disease makes up 11 per cent of Australia ’s total direct healthcare expenditure. It is the biggest health problem we have.

Over the last decade, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Australia rose by almost 20 per cent. Despite improved treatments and better understanding of prevention.

The main  cardiovascular disease  killers are stroke and heart attack. Tonight in the first of  two health specials focussing on cardiovascular disease we will be looking at heart attack. In the first hour we’ll learn about what causes heart attack and how it is treated and importantly how to recognise the symptoms and what to do. In the second hour we’ll be looking at prevention and life after heart attack.

I am joined in the studio by

Professor Garry Jennings -   Specialist Cardiologist, Director of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Medicine for Bayside Health  and Director of the Baker Heart Research Institute

Dianne InglisMICA Paramedic with the Metropolitan Ambulance Service

Professor Simon Stewart - Director of Preventative Cardiology at the Baker Heart Research Institute

Kathy Bell  - CEO of the National Heart Foundation Victoria
