These days we hear so much about scientific advances and  high tech treatments for diseases and that makes it all the more amazing that science is proving that a very old and simple method is helping people with illnesses like Dementia. 

We all know that music and art make us feel good but there is evidence that there is evidence that music and art help mood and may assist with dealing with Dementia both for the person with the condition and their carer.

Word Alzheimer's Day is this week - 21st September  and in Melbourne the Alzheimer's Vic is raising awareness of Music and Art as Therapy for Dementia. 

There are 1,000 new cases of dementia each week in Australia . The total number of Australians with dementia is now 220,000. By 2050 this figure will escalate  to 731,000.  Alzheimer’s The theme of the Month is No time to lose.

On this evenings program we will be discussing the role of music and art in health with particular focus on dementia

My guests include :

Professor Ken Rockwood -   Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Dalhousie University ,Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is in Australia for Dementia Awareness month and will be speaking at the National Gallery of Victoria on 21st September for World Alzheimer's Day. As well as his talk Dementia, Art & Music, Professor Rockwood will illustrate the theme of  Translating Research into Practice .

Associate Professor Denise Grocke   Head of Music Therapy University of Melbourne. She directs the undergraduate and graduate programmes in music therapy and the Graduate Diploma in Guided Imagery and Music (Bonny Method), and is Director of the National Music Therapy Research Unit. She is co-editor of two books, and author of many chapters and articles on music therapy and Guided Imagery and Music. She is a former President of the World Federation of Music Therapy and a current member of the Advisory Board of the doctoral program in music therapy at the University of Aalborg, Denmark.

David Hooker   - Community Development Officer Alzheimer's Australia Victoria Geelong - Curator and Master mind of the concept for the exhibition at Geelong Gallery called "Through Their Eyes"
