Every eight minutes someone in Australia is admitted to hospital with a fracture related to osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become fragile and the risk of bone fracture is greatly increased.
Osteoporosis is a global epidemic affecting more than 150 million people worldwide and 2 million people here in Australia.
Many people mistakenly think it only happens to l women after menopause an while 1 in 2 woman over 60 will have an osteoporotic fracture so will 1 in 3 men.
Osteoporosis is treatable but better still is it preventable.
Peak bone mass is reached in our teenage years so it is vital that young people have a calcium rich diet.
This week is National Healthy Bones Week and the theme this year is ensuring young people have bone healthy lunches.
Vitamin D is essential to help calcium get into bones. The best source of Vitamin D is via sunlight . In Australia we have a high risk of skin cancer so exposure to the sun for vitamin D must be balanced with the risk of it causing skin cancer.
