NZ ABORTION /DEPRESSION STUDY WIDELY MISINTERPRETED

A recent study in New Zealand failed to find any proof that Abortion causes depression or other psychological problems. They are linked but not as proven cause and effect . Some media reports seem to have reported a more definite result. How and why has this occurred ?

ANNUAL AUSTRALIA DAY AMBASSADOR LUNCH

This year I am again getting together with fellow Australia Day Ambassador Vlado , the greatest steak expert around, to put on a special lunch to celebrate Australia Day and Community Heroes. Vlado has donated his restaurant and all the food and wine. My job is to find the guests. Last year we celebrated volunteers and carers. This year Vlado and I decided to invite people to nominate emergency service workers who they believe have gone that extra mile. 3AW have been kind enough to give us air time to find these people. All police, fire and ambulance workers do a fabulous job but often they are humble about the extra bits they do. For them, protecting or saving people's lives is their every day work but so many add a personal touch that makes an incredible difference. Here is your chance to say thanks. If you would like to nominate someone please email me and tell me in 100 words or less why your nominee should come to lunch. Please include details like their name and contact details if you know them. If you aren't sure then the date, time and place of the event and permission for me to ask the relevant service to access their records about you is essential. ...................and who said there was no free lunch ? :)

GENEALOGY and AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE

CALLING ALL DESCENDANTS OF FEMALE CONVICTS !!

On November 7 2004 I attended a celebration of the lives of the women who were transported to Australia as female convicts between 1804 and 1853 . We invited people to come if they were descendants of convicts of those who worked or lived at the Cascade Female Factory in Hobart, Tasmannia

I am proud that my 4 x great grandmother Elizabeth Cato - nee Burgess was the deputy matron and midwife at the Cascade Female House of Correction ( also called the female factory) from1831 - 1840.

ANIMAL WELFARE

I have always owned animals and currently my two cats, Tig and Boo, are an important part of my family.

I believe in compulsory de-sexing of all pets other than those owned by registered breeders for the purpose of breeding. Our wild life and our pets should no be put at risk of disease and trauma from stray or animals.

PRE MENSTRUAL DYSMORPHIC DISORDER ( PMMD)

On 3AW recently I talked about PMMD - which is a severe form of PMS - it seems that maybe 5 -10% of women may suffer mood symptoms of such severity that they interfere with daily life. It is important to realise that most women will get some symptoms before a period but PMS and PMDD are severe. The good news is that help is at hand for this group of women ( and their partners). I am pleased to see that the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia has recently approved two medications for use in treatment of this debilitating condition.

In order to make the diagnosis there are some criteria which need to be met. They include that the symptoms must occur in the second part of the menstrual cycle after ovulation and be relived by the onset of a period. This mean that they are definitely driven by hormonal changes. Of course if someone has distressing mood changes that don't fit these criteria that doesn't mean they don't deserve treatment - it is simply that we wont use the label of PMDD.

I read out a series of questions that may indicate PMDD is a possible diagnosis but obviously that is a bit simplistic. I also mentioned the value of keeping a PMS diary. Many people have contacted me saying they had difficulty locating the articles on my site so here are some short cuts :

Generally this site is about health information in the broadest sense. As a GP I find the web very useful but I also know there are many traps- I have tried to put up some information here myself or link to pages that I trust. I hope you will find it useful .

I also believe that isolation is a huge problem and getting bigger - and the worst part is that many people are isolated in a bustling city . I want to find ways to link people - its the only way our communities will survive - hence I have tried to make a list of support groups let me know if you know of any other deserving sites.
